Position: Summer Volunteer Education and Outreach Intern
Description: Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH) is an environmental education nonprofit that supports salmon recovery. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about fish and education. In this role you will view juvenile salmon up close while teaching the public about salmon conservation, hatchery fish operations, and watershed stewardship.
Dates: June - August
Times: Daily 10 AM - 2 PM
Hours: 4 - 20 hours / week. Shifts are 4 hours, and interns must commit to a minimum of 100 hours. which equates to 1-2 shifts a week. There is some flexibility to work around summer schedules.
Requirements:
Must be able to communicate well with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, especially youth.
Must be able to learn and teach science information.
Must be able to work independently in a dynamic environment.
Must be professional, responsible, and great with time management.
Must be comfortable working with technology and processing transactions.
Must have reliable transportation to the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (125 W Sunset Way, Issaquah, WA, 98027).
Responsibilities:
Lead hatchery tours for school and public groups.
Staff the FISHop Gift Shop to answer questions and process transactions.
Support operations for education and outreach events.
Complete an education and outreach project that benefits the organization, such as design and lead a special topic tour / program or build / update an education prop. This project will be identified and agreed upon by the FISH Volunteer Coordinator and Volunteer Intern during the first few weeks of the internship.
