Volunteer: Homework Help and Tutoring

Boys & Girls Clubs of Bellevue is looking for volunteers to help with our after school tutoring program. We provide homework help and tutoring to students in grades K to 12 in a variety of subjects including Reading, Writing, Math, Science, History, and Languages.

As a tutor you will provide academic assistance to students during homework help time after school. Based on your preferred subjects and availability you will be assigned to a Clubhouse that best suits your skills. 

A student could come in needing help with homework; or they might need help understanding a tricky concept before a huge test. As a tutor your main responsibility to help the student with their questions so that they have full understanding of the subject and questions at hand. As always, it's important to be able to communicate and interact with the students in order to provide the best working dynamic.

Volunteers fluent in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese are encouraged to apply!

We strive to provide our youth with consistency. We seek volunteers who are interested in supporting our after-school programming at least once per week for at least 3 months. Having a regular, ongoing presence in the program helps volunteers build strong relationships with our children youth. 

Duties 

Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students  Greet students when they enter the space  Provide one-on-one and small group assistance with homework or academic needs  Maintain a positive attitude and remain patient with students  Help prepare and clean space 

Desired Skills: 

Experience working with youth in tutoring or mentoring role   Ability to motivate and provide direction, as well as excitement for teaching or tutoring  Patience and understanding of barriers faced by youth and how this affects their focus, learning, behavior, and consistency  Must be able to support and affirm youth with diverse cultures, racial and ethnic identities, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, abilities, and countries of origin  Able to make a three month commitment

All volunteers and interns must complete all the following steps before starting: 

Apply for the volunteer position  Complete all necessary paperwork  Submit two character references  Criminal Background Check (at the BGCB's expense)  Attend an in person or virtual volunteer orientation

Our youth need role models like you to mentor and coach out youth in youth sports! Volunteers coaches and assistant coaches are required for each team. All coaches must complete a volunteer application, clear the background check and complete our athlete protection training prior to being assigned to a team. Volunteer participation is key to the success of our program and we believe all youth deserve access to sports and positive mentors. Sport programs include: basketball, volleyball, track, soccer, and flag football.

A Youth Development Professional (YDP) directly impacts the lives of our Club members by engaging in safe, interactive programs and learning experiences. The role assists in the daily delivery of a wide variety of developmentally appropriate youth programs and activities such as Education & Career Development, Sports & Recreation, Character & Leadership Development, Homework Support, and Specialized Initiatives.  

 

A YDP is a self-motivated and positive individual who can balance an energetic, fun youth- focused atmosphere with professionalism and maturity. A YDP serves as a role model for all Club Members and is expected to participate in all activities and motivate and inspire our youth to engage as well.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Assist with the planning and implementation of Club programs and ensure quality youth engagement  Monitor and participate in youth activities to create a safe and positive learning environment for all Club members  Build meaningful, positive relationships with youth and families  Communicate professionally with Club members, parents, and staff  Model positive behaviors for children and staff  

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Demonstrated experience working with youth, parents/guardians, and community partners  Demonstrated experience working in a team environment  Strong communications skills, both oral and written  Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma Must pass National Background Check 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:  

Six months to a year of previous experience working in a Boys & Girls Club or similar youth development setting  Bilingual in Spanish or Mandarin is a plus  Preferred availability includes Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday between the hours of 1:30-6:30 p.m. and Wednesday & Friday from 11:00 am-6:30 p.m.
